>>History

After `F33f`_`[Ward Cunningham`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Ward_Cunningham]`_`f created the first wiki website `F33f`_`[WikiWikiWeb`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=WikiWikiWeb]`_`f, there were various "WikiWikiClones" that implemented the functions and design of WikiWikiWeb's engine ("WikiBase"), mainly written in `F33f`_`[Perl`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Perl]`_`f. Peter Merel developed CVWiki which was an early WikiWikiClone released partially under the `F33f`_`[GNU Lesser General Public License`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=GNU_Lesser_General_Public_License]`_`f, and Markus Denker then developed AtisWiki which was released under the `F33f`_`[GNU General Public License`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=GNU_General_Public_License]`_`f and based on CVWiki.`:cite-ref-4[`F5bf`_`[4`#cite-note-4]`_`f]

In the 1990s, Clifford Adams initiated the `!Use`!net `!Mod`!eration project that would allow users to share rating, editing, and eventually summary/change information about `F33f`_`[Usenet`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Usenet]`_`f postings.`:cite-ref-5[`F5bf`_`[5`#cite-note-5]`_`f] It was replaced by the concept of `F33f`_`[wikis`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Wiki]`_`f in 1999, and the development of UseModWiki started on October 11 as a simplified `F33f`_`[fork`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Fork_(software_development)]`_`f of AtisWiki. From version 0.4 ("WikiFour") in November 1999, more functions and improvements were introduced to UseModWiki.`:cite-ref-history-6-0[`F5bf`_`[6`#cite-note-history-6]`_`f] In 2000, the second UseModWiki website `F33f`_`[MeatballWiki`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=MeatballWiki]`_`f was launched and hosted in `*usemod.com`*, along with the official website of UseModWiki.

In 2001, as Adams was both of the UseModWiki developer and a `F33f`_`[Wikipedian`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Wikipedia_community]`_`f, he brought many improvements for the usages of an encyclopedia to v0.91 and v0.92, especially "free links" that uses double square-brackets (e.g., `B100`F9d9[[Wikipedia]]`f`b) as an option for linking to another page, supplementing the older functionality of using `F33f`_`[camel case`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Camel_case]`_`f.`:cite-ref-old-versions-7-0[`F5bf`_`[7`#cite-note-old-versions-7]`_`f]`:cite-ref-aosa-2-1[`F5bf`_`[2`#cite-note-aosa-2]`_`f] In September 2003, after two years of development from the previous version, the release of version 1.0 introduced many new features including `F33f`_`[CSS`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=CSS]`_`f, `F33f`_`[RSS`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=RSS]`_`f, file uploads, `F33f`_`[UTF-8`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=UTF-8]`_`f.`:cite-ref-8[`F5bf`_`[8`#cite-note-8]`_`f]

The development was then halted, and a `F33f`_`[cross-site scripting`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Cross-site_scripting]`_`f vulnerability (CVE-2004-1397) was discovered in December 2004.`:cite-ref-9[`F5bf`_`[9`#cite-note-9]`_`f]`:cite-ref-10[`F5bf`_`[10`#cite-note-10]`_`f] It was patched in July 2007 when Markus Lude took over the project of UseModWiki from Clifford Adams, with the release of version 1.0.1. Only bug fixing versions were released since that.`:cite-ref-history-6-1[`F5bf`_`[6`#cite-note-history-6]`_`f] The official domain was moved to `*usemod.org`* in late September 2023, and a minor update for that change was released later in November.`:cite-ref-11[`F5bf`_`[11`#cite-note-11]`_`f]

>>Use by Wikipedia

The wiki software for the `F33f`_`[English Wikipedia`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=English_Wikipedia]`_`f was UseModWiki (phase I, retroactively) since the establishment on January 15, 2001, and as of January 2002, Wikipedias in 22 languages were powered by UseModWiki.`:cite-ref-12[`F5bf`_`[12`#cite-note-12]`_`f] The English edition switched to "the PHP script" (phase II) on January 25, 2002, a new wiki software based on UseModWiki but rewritten in `F33f`_`[PHP`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=PHP]`_`f. On July 20, "the PHP script" was then replaced by its own rewritten wiki software (phase III), currently known as `F33f`_`[MediaWiki`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=MediaWiki]`_`f, for better performance and functionality.

Other language editions gradually switched to MediaWiki afterwards, and as of late 2003, only a few active editions including `F33f`_`[Catalan Wikipedia`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Catalan_Wikipedia]`_`f were still powered by UseModWiki.`:cite-ref-13[`F5bf`_`[13`#cite-note-13]`_`f] In 2004, the last-remaining UseModWiki editions switched to MediaWiki.`:cite-ref-14[`F5bf`_`[14`#cite-note-14]`_`f]
